Volunteer Positions
Mobile Outreach Van:
24-Hour Crisis Hotline
Community Engagement (Non-Direct Service)
Monthly Open Volunteer Night (Non-Direct Service)
- Position Description: The HIPS Mobile Services Van serves as a “mini HIPS office on wheels”. The van does street-based outreach, needle exchange, condom distribution, and harm reduction counseling around DC. Our primary need is for volunteers on overnight weekend shifts, which go from 10 P.M. – 8 A.M. on Friday nights. We also have a need for assistance during evening shifts, including on weekends, which typically begin around 4 P.M. on weekdays and 1 P.M. on weekends. Our daytime team is out daily (M-F) and occasionally has some openings for volunteers.
- Requirements: Completion of HIPS' ~40 hour direct service training; Proof of COVID Vaccination
- Commitment level: 1-2 shifts per month preferred.
24-Hour Crisis Hotline
- Position Description: The HIPS hotline is a low-volume, 24/hr support service that provides harm reduction counseling, safety planning, crisis management, health information, and referrals, as well as support to DC’s LGBTQ community. It also helps link clients to our continuum of services such as: testing and treatment (HIV, HCV, & STD), harm reduction based needle exchange services, substance use treatment and recovery services, drop-in service referrals, mental health support and counseling, support and life skills groups, and gender affirming care.
- Requirements: Completion of HIPS' ~40 hour direct service training
- Commitment level: 1-2 shifts per month preferred
Community Engagement (Non-Direct Service)
- Position Description: Assisting with HIPS' fundraising, advocacy, tabling, and events opportunities.
- Commitment level: Availability for 1-2 events per month is preferred
Monthly Open Volunteer Night (Non-Direct Service)
- Position Description: Every month, HIPS hosts an open volunteer night for any and all interested individuals to come help with tasks such as supply packing, organizing inventory, and preparing supplies for distribution. Join us on the second Wednesday of each month from 6-8pm at our drop-in center at 906 H Street NE.
