 Sex Worker Advocacy Coalition Coordinator



SUMMARY
The SWAC Coalition Coordinator supports the work of the DC Sex Work Advocacy Coalition, a strong 20+ coalition of sex workers, organizations and allies dedicated to improving the lives of folks engaged in sex work in Washington DC.  Currently the main work of the SWAC has been the DC campaign to decriminalize sex work.  The position is housed at HIPS, but is responsible to the coalition members, providing logistical support, technical assistance and coordination to the coalition.  The ideal candidate will have lived experience with sex work,  organizing experience,  and experience working with coalitions or collectives. 

Key responsibilities include:
Coalition support: 

  • Facilitate Coalition restructuring to reflect growing size and member work on the campaign
  • Plan and facilitate monthly coalition and working group meetings (agendas, minutes)
  • Manage coalition google group
  • Coordinate partner outreach 
  • Keep coalition members accountable and on schedule

Organizing:
  • Support with planning and securing funding for member actions and events

Policy:
  • Build and maintain relationships with Council Members and staff
  • Organize and facilitate meetings with Council Members and staff
  • Track local legislative developments impacting sex worker rights, organize support or opposition to legislation

Communications:
  • Track and compile weekly digest of campaign coverage
  • Build and maintain press relationships
  • Manage media relationships (press releases, press turn out)
  • Maintain online campaign presence (campaign twitter, facebook, and website)
  • Create and maintain petitions and other online actions

Administrative:
  • Manage Coalition budget  to ensure proper flow of funds and accountability
  • Grant proposal drafting and reporting
  • Create report backs for coalition members
  • Provide administrative support to the Advocacy Manager as requested

What to expect:
  • Daily: monitor coalition emails; post on social accounts; field media requests; identify coverage for speaking events and interviews
  • Weekly: check in with campaign partners on ongoing projects; weekly round up of media coverage; outreach with current and prospective campaign supporters to discuss campaign goals; promote events and actions; provide editing support; attend HIPS staff meetings and supervision meetings. 
  • Monthly: plan and facilitate coalition meetings; organize meetings with electeds and other decisions makers; support coalition member events (canvassing, popular education events, etc); support creation of needed materials
  • Annually: grant reporting; facilitate campaign planning and strategy

  • Commitment to harm reduction, social justice, racial justice, and equity;
  • Commitment to uplifting the voices and leadership of people those with lived experience in our issues
  • Ability to be a forward thinker, anticipate future needs and see the bigger picture of how to connect the work across the coalition. 
  • Belief in intersectional approaches
  • Must be able to handle confidential materials with discretion;
  • Strong facilitation skills;
  • Strong ability to utilize google suites including sheets and docs.
  • Must be able to navigate virtual platforms including “Zoom”, Google Hang-outs, and “Go To Meetings” and Google Drive

COMPENSATION: $21/hour 30 hours per week + full benefits
