 Director of Development

SUMMARY
HIPS is seeking a creative and innovative person to join our leadership team as our first full-time development director.  As the Director of Development, you will play a key role in HIPS growth, leading the design, implementation and continued development of our comprehensive fundraising plan consisting of federal, local and private grants, fee for service, and individual donations and events. The Director will work closely with the Executive Director, Board of Directors and leadership team, and provide  leadership, strategic mentorship, and supervision of HIPS Development Coordinator and HIPS FACE (Fundraising/Advocacy/Communications/Events) volunteers.   

The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years experience planning, organizing and executing both grant and donor-based fundraising activities, and be ready to learn what they don't know. They will also be passionate about harm reduction, LGBTQ+ issues, racial and social justice, sex workers’ rights and the grassroots nonprofit environment.  If you are  creative, self motivated and a strategic thinker who is passionate about growing a fundraising department to support life saving harm reduction and advocacy work in the community, this position might be for you!

Keys to Success

Development Leadership
  • Develop and execute the HIPS annual fundraising plan timeline, including a comprehensive grants, sponsorship, event, and individual giving strategy with targeted and measurable financial goals
  • Ensure HIPS has the best tools and policies for managing our funding relationships, including relational database management (currently Nationbuilder)
  • Steward and grow HIPS monthly membership/monthly donor program

Collaborative Leadership
  • Work collaboratively with program staff to develop, write, and submit, cohesive and compelling proposals and timely reports, consistent with donor requirements
  • Develop new systems to improve reporting, tracking and communicating HIPS’s successes
  • Support staff, volunteers and board members in their personal and peer-to-peer fundraising efforts, and be willing to serve as a mentor to support HIPS internal leadership pipeline

Relationship Building
  • Identify new opportunities for donor, volunteer and community engagement
  • Identify and cultivate new potential foundation and corporate partnerships that align with HIPS core values
  • Develop and implement a major gifts program 
  • ​Manage HIPS online, direct mail, social media and event based fundraising communications

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS
  • Demonstrated success in securing six-figure grants and stewarding multi-year grants. Experience with DC local government agencies is a asset, but not required
  • Minimum of five years of successful fundraising and relationship building experience, including donor cultivation and grant writing
  • Success in directly or supporting the solicitation of individual donations of $5,000 or more
  • Knowledge of sound and ethical fundraising principles
  • Strong leadership capabilities, including the ability to appropriately delegate and engage others in the fundraising process
  • Excitement about working in a fast-paced, grassroots, nonprofit work environment with folks from diverse lived experiences
  • A superior team player; ability to maintain collaborative and team-oriented relationships with staff, volunteers, board members and community
  • Flexibility for evening/weekend meetings, and a willingness to travel as needed
  • An ability to engage and connect with our team while working remotely during the pandemic

JOB REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
 This position is currently full time remote due to Covid-19 safety protocols, but there is an expectation of at least 2-3 full days per week working on-site at the HIPS office when pandemic protocols are lifted. HIPS administrative offices in NE Washington DC are located up a short flight of stairs on the 2nd floor of our building that houses our drop in center, clinic and programmatic spaces.  HIPS offers a generous comprehensive benefits package including 100% employer-paid health insurance, 401 K program, generous PTO package, and schedule flexibility. COMPENSATION: $75,000 - $90,000 + full benefits
