Facts on Sex Work

HIPS Services

Mobile Outreach and Education
HIPS provides safer sex materials, counseling, and support to street-based workers on weekends from 10pm to 5 am.

24 Hour Hotline
We provide counseling and referrals for sex workers and their families.

Peer Education and Outreach
We train former or current sex workers to educate their peers on safety and HIV.  Our Peer Educators extend HIPS programs into areas traditional health programs can’t reach.

Client Advocacy
HIPS provides basic services, such as helping to obtain an ID card or finding emergency shelter.

Professional Education
HIPS trains medical and social service providers to appropriately address the needs of sex workers and address barriers sex workers face in accessing services.

Syringe Exchange
Beginning July 2008, with support from the DC Department of Health, HIPS launched DC’s first night-time mobile exchange. Syringe Exchange services are now available on the HIPS outreach van on Friday and Saturday nights, 11pm to 5 am.  Call the HIPS Hotline on Friday and Saturday nights to hook up with the Van. HIPS also has two fixed site locations, near Transgender Health Empowerment’s offices on Fridays 7-8pm and at DCats 7pm the 2nd Sunday of every month. Call Jeff, HIPS Outreach Manager, for more information about syringe exchange.

HIPS mission is to assist female, male, and transgender individuals engaging in sex work in Washington, DC in leading healthy lives. Using a harm reduction model, HIPS’ programs strive to address the impact that HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted infections, discrimination, poverty, violence and drug use have on the lives of individuals engaging in sex work.
