Internship: Events Coordinator (Return to Top)

Supervisor: Executive Director, Cyndee Clay

Hours: 5 hrs/week (flexible, self-directed)

Qualifications:

  • Dependable, creative self-starter who loves to organize and attend events.

  • Willing to motivate and collaborate with current HIPS volunteers.

  • Must reflect the philosophy of HIPS: sex worker friendly, sex positive, feminist, trans-friendly, anti-racist, non-judgmental

Preferred Qualities:

  • Experience organizing events in the past.

  • Connections at local bars, restaurants and other places of business.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop & implement a workplan for this internship.

  • Organize once monthly events to: 1) raise funds for HIPS services, 2) educate the wider community on issues affecting HIPS clients, 3) increase visibility of HIPS, and 4) convene HIPS clients, staff, volunteers, supporters, allies and the wider community in a fun, positive environment.

  • Events may include: happy hours, speakers forums, open mike nights, pageants, auctions, outings, performances

  • Develop and execute promotional campaigns for these events.

  • Report planning and progress to HIPS Executive Director on a weekly basis.

Also responsible for:

  • Attend Monthly volunteer meetings

  • 3-4 hotline shifts per month (on call cell phone 6pm-10am)

  • 1 Van Outreach shift per month

  • Attending panels, presentations and community forums as able

Internship: Client Continuing Education and Events Coordinator (Return to Top)

Supervisor: Director of Peer Education

Hours: 5-10 hrs/week (flexible, self-directed)

Qualifications:

  • An enthusiastic educator with the desire to organize events to provide sex workers with the tools they want and need (and with the humility to ask what those things are).

  • Familiarity with and desire to learn more about the challenges facing sex workers (trans-phobia, sexism, heterosexism, homophobia, sexual violence, hate crimes, trauma, HIV/STI’s, economic and educational inequalities, substance dependence)

  • Dependable, creative self-starter who loves to facilitate productive, educational conversations with both clients and community members.

  • Willing to motivate and collaborate with current HIPS volunteers.

  • Must reflect the philosophy of HIPS: sex worker friendly, sex positive, feminist, trans-friendly, anti-racist, non-judgmental

Preferred Qualities:

  • Experience instructing groups

  • Connections to educators, activists and advocates in areas beneficial to HIPS clients.

  • Ability to meet at least once a month during regular business hours (10am to 7pm).

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop & implement a workplan for this internship.

  • Organize once monthly events to: 1) provide continuing education sessions to HIPS clients, 2) increase visibility of HIPS among the sex worker community, and 3) convene HIPS clients, staff, and volunteers in community and self-strengthening events.

  • Events may include: workshops, speakers, self-defense classes, computer skills, outings

  • Develop and execute recruiting campaigns for these events.

  • Report planning and progress to HIPS Peer Educator on a weekly basis.

Internship: Sex-worker Re-entry Coordinator (Return to Top)

Supervisor: Outreach Director, Jeff Chubb

Hours: 5-10 hrs/wk, daytime

Qualifications:

  • Self-motivated person who is able to encounter and engage sex workers, public defenders, parole officers, social workers, police officers and others in positive non-confrontational dialogue regarding harm/risk reduction and sex work.

  • Able to approach, engage and develop rapport with potential clients.

  • Must reflect the philosophy of HIPS: sex worker friendly, sex positive, feminist, trans-friendly, anti-racist, non-judgmental

Preferred Qualities:

  • Experience with, knowledge of, or connections in the DC judicial system.

  • Willingness to travel with clients to destinations.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop & implement a workplan for this internship.

  • Develop relationships with DC Public Defender to connect potential clients to HIPS services.

  • Engage with individuals awaiting arraignment on solicitation charges offering non-judgmental support and full knowledge of harm reduction techniques and HIPS services.

  • Provide referrals for basic needs.

  • Engage service providers (such as Our Place DC) who work with formerly incarcerated individuals.

  • Option to engage in field work with these agencies during trips to prisons located outside of DC.

  • Report activities and progress to HIPS Outreach Director on a weekly basis.

Internship: Bad Date Sheet Coordinator (Return to Top)

Supervisor: Outreach Director, Jeff Chubb

Hours: 5-10 hrs/wk, daytime

Qualifications:

  • Self-motivated person willing to travel locally.

  • Able to approach, engage and develop rapport with service providers.

  • Must reflect the philosophy of HIPS: sex worker friendly, sex positive, feminist, trans-friendly, anti-racist, non-judgmental

Preferred Qualities:

  • Experience with, knowledge of, or connections among DC service providers.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop & implement a workplan for this internship.

  • Identify and engage collaborating HIV prevention agencies and basic needs providers who serve sex workers to educate them about the DCBDS and train them how to report.

  • Travel to these providers for monthly check-ins regarding the status of the DCBDS program, refilling displays, collecting reports.

  • Promote HIPS services while at these agencies.

  • Post DCBDS in strategic locations for dissemination to sex workers.

  • Report to Outreach Director on a weekly basis.

Internship: Information and Advocacy Campaign Coordinator (Return to Top)

Supervisor: Outreach Director, Jeff Chubb

Hours: 5-10 hrs/wk (flexible, self-directed)

Qualifications:

  • Previous organizing experience and willingness to recruit and engage HIPS clients, staff, volunteers and allies in policy education and activism.

  • Familiarity with issues pertaining to and challenging sex workers.

  • Aptitude with computers.

  • Must reflect the philosophy of HIPS: sex worker friendly, sex positive, feminist, trans-friendly, anti-racist, non-judgmental.

Preferred Qualities:

  • Previous blogging experience.

  • Connected at local and national press outlets.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop & implement a workplan for this internship.

  • Create & screen content for a HIPS blog, with the collaboration and contribution of the wider HIPS community (clients, staff, volunteers and allies)

  • Provide Content to Outreach Director & Executive Director for approval.

  • Post & maintain blog.

  • Identify existing political campaigns (regarding legal issues, sex work, sexual freedom, sexual preference, gender identity, drug policy and other policy issues affecting the sex worker community) and promote and engage these to the larger HIPS community.

  • Report weekly to Outreach Director

Internship: Web Development Coordinator (Return to Top)

Hours: 5-10 hrs/wk (flexible, self-directed)

Qualifications:

  • Can demonstrate creativity and experience in web design.

  • Must reflect the philosophy of HIPS: sex worker friendly, sex positive, feminist, trans-friendly, anti-racist, non-judgmental

Preferred qualities:

  • Experience designing websites and other on-line networking and organizing sites such a myspace, facebook, livejournal, etc.

  • Experience with youtube, myspace and other multimedia tools for education and networking

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop & implement a workplan for this internship.

  • Survey online sex workers and service sites as well as HIPS clients, staff, volunteers and donors to determine desired content of HIPS web page and design a multimedia site to meet these needs.

  • Engage HIPS clients, staff, volunteers and allies for continued content development including youtube, audio files, “success stories” and merchandise store.

  • Using the information gathered, increase HIPS on-line presence and reach out to new clients, volunteers, donors and supporters.

  • Submit weekly progress reports to the Executive Director.

  • Submit, by the end of the internship a plan for redesign & maintenance of HIPS website, and design and plan for HIPS myspace and other social networking sites.

Internship: Prevention Programs Assistant (Return to Top)

Supervisor: Peer Education Director, Elizabeth Saracco

Hours: 10-15 hrs/wk, daytime

Qualifications:

  • Flexible, self directed and reliable.

  • Must reflect the philosophy of HIPS: sex worker friendly, sex positive, feminist, trans-friendly, anti-racist, non-judgmental

Preferred qualities:

  • Experience with group facilitation.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop & implement a workplan for this internship.

  • Develop recruitment strategies including flyers, talking points, peer-recruitment, etc.

  • Obtain materials necessary for prevention groups.

  • Co-facilitate prevention groups.

  • Manage and compile data necessary for reporting.
